What is the biggest difference between talking with a human vs. an AI therapist?

This is a very good question. In a world where a chatbot is often more easily accessible than a person, it seems rational and reasonable to engage with that resource. I'll offer that aside from the various structural issues that AI faces, one main advantage with seeing a human therapist is getting immediate and social feedback. Practicing skills in real-time and getting constructive feedback to help build on skills and qualities which you already posses is another service offered in this work. AI might be able to give advice and validate your experiences, while a human can provide refinement and interpersonal effectiveness with emotional connection and understanding in addition to guidance and validity.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

I think life takes a village and our friends and family are our village. They provide the key support and guidance every day that I find people are deserving of and benefit from having. A mental health professional, while also a guide and support, can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential and can be free of the weight of relation. You won’t have to worry about others knowing your business or judging on your past. Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication can be a very effective component to treatment, but it alone cannot solve all issues. Often medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals. If medication addresses the symptoms, we can use therapy to address the root causes.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.

How long will it take?

It depends. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place. Like with many agents of change though, consistency is often key.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success. Engaging willingly, and having open discussions with your therapist on unwillingness or feelings of resistance can also help create a process of efficiency for you.

Do you accept insurances? If not, what is the hourly rate?

Yes! I am happy to accept several insurances from clients.I am happy to discuss about insurance or private pay rates. I have a sliding scale private pay based on means and needs.
